Week of October 14th: Student-Led Conferences- I will be sending an online sign-up request and summary of conferences by Wednesday of this week. Kiddos will get to present first, I know you’ll be so proud! Academic Announcements:
Study Hall and Home Project: Paragraph of the Week. Kiddos were given a hardcopy and this week’s paragraph prompt/format is also attached. If your child want to work on at home, please make sure packet is returned each school day (to be worked on during Study Hall). Thank you. Test: Math Rounding this Thursday, October 3rd. Study Guide (student corrected quiz) went home last Friday in Friday Folder. Tests (2): Civics and Patriotic Symbols this Friday, October 4th. Study Guides sent home today. Test will be same format. LOLs will conclude Civics unit this Friday. We will begin Landforms next week. EEF link to contribute online
https://secure.eefatope.org/index.php?
Agenda- your child’s agenda will be sent home each week, Monday thru Thursday. If you would, please review and sign your initials at the bottom of each day’s date. Thank you. This week the content will be a little lighter than usual with reminders and 20min of reading this evening.
Friday Folders- Please send Friday Folders with your child each Monday. Thank you.
Lunch Club- One day each week, I’ll host a lunch club where third-graders can eat their lunch in-class and work on social problem solving strategies related to recess. After eating, kiddos are better prepared to have fun at recess and apply skills that create more of a harmonious environment. Lunch Club Update- We’re in week two of Girls and Boys lunch club and I feel very positive about the trajectory our work is heading. Your kiddos are discussing challenges they may be experiencing at recess and lunch (without discussing names, of course), and then as a group we share possible solutions and present proactive solutions as well. At the end, we say something positive about the person they’re sitting next too. The kiddos seem more trusting and even more kind over the last two weeks. We problem-solve about 15minutes while they eat and then everyone still has an opportunity to play outside and apply what they just ‘learned’. Thanks for your support! :-)
Optional Homework: Please see attached Paragraph of the Week. Kiddos were given a hardcopy and this week’s paragraph prompt/format is also attached. If your child want to work on at home, please make sure packet is returned each school day (to be worked on during Study Hall). Thank you. Over the next month (overview):

STREAM- Forces of Motion
Message from Enrichment Stream Teacher Mrs. Amber Dracolakis: * Forces of Motion
last week: We brainstormed what makes bridges so strong. Then, we brainstormed how to build a paper bridge that can hold a lot of pennies. The challenge is students can only use 2 pieces of paper and no tape.
This week: We will continue building our bridges, building at least 3 different designs. Once students have their final design, we will have a class competition to see which bridge holds the most pennies.
Also, I know everyone is starting to have their NGSS meetings now. I’d love to have a brief meeting at some point, with your grade level team to make sure we teach different lessons. Let me know when you have any availability. I’m available before and after school anytime. Thank you!!

Announcements:
Message from Dr. Cameron:
Greetings OPE Families!
We are highlighting our TRAC (Teamwork, Regulation, Awareness and Community) program this week! The purpose of the TRAC program is to provide universal social emotional instruction to the entire school population. Students will gain skills to boost their self-awareness, increase self-esteem and self-regulation, improve their social skills, encourage empathy, and learn to seek internal motivation for their personal and academic success. The goal is to create positive relationships and an atmosphere where each student feels connected, cared about, and physically and emotionally safe.
This week's lessons include understanding your feelings and how to be a kind friend. This week it Starts With Hello. Lauren Weatherall, our TRAC teacher, has organized these amazing activities this week:
Monday, Sept 23: Enrichment teachers and staff will be greeting students as they arrive at school and there will be a 'Hello wall' for students to write a kind message to a friend.
Tuesday, Sept. 24: Schoolwide Cyber Safety assemblies and a Cyberbully info night for parents at 6:00PM with Jon Moffat.
Wednesday, Sept 25: Wear green to support 'Start with Hello' campaign.
Thursday, Sept. 26: Compliment chains at lunch recess.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
Kindly,
Beth Cameron, PrinciPAL

Hello Families,
I hope all of you had wonderful family time this past Labor Day weekend!
It was terrific to see such a turn-out for Back-to-School-Night last Thursday! For those of you who couldn’t make it, I’m looking forward to communicating with you throughout the school year and helping your child reach social, emotional, and academic success! In case you missed it or you would like some late-night reading, as promised, The Back-to-School-Night PowerPoint that I presented is on our class website (see link below) under the tab: BTSN. Over the course of the week, I’ll update our volunteer list. If you’ve been waiting to volunteer, now’s your chance! Homework (Announcements on Message Tab)
August 27, 2018
Hi Families,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend after your child’s first week of school! Each Monday (holiday free Mondays), I will send an email with events from the previous week, upcoming learning, assemblies, musical performances, fundraisers, and anything pertinent I want you to know about.
Monday Message will also be posted on class website: www.Langevinslearners.weebly.com
Above- PICTURE DAY TODAY- COULDN’T RESIST TAKING A SILLY CLASS PIC
Last week was a terrific week transitioning from second grade to summer and summer to third grade. The 2018/2019 LOLs (Langevin’s Outstanding Learners) are a fantastic group of kiddos that seem to be well-matched together! I know it’s going to be a super year!
Over the next several weeks we will be learning about Civics and integrating the topic with Language Arts as we begin the fiction chapter book, ‘Lily and Miss Liberty’ written by Carly Stevens. We will incorporate science as we study the different land fauna and flora and origins of some of our national parks.
We started our first of two weekly wheels today that included: STREAM (Science, Technology, and Engineering), Library, and CAD (Creative Art and Design). At our Back-to-School get together this Thursday (see details below*), I’ll go over in more detail about our Wheel schedule, integration into curriculum, and our enrichment teachers helping your kiddos soar!
This year your child will have an opportunity to switch for math as he/she is grouped with classmates that demonstrate similar skill level and taught by all three third grade teachers: Mrs. Madanat, Mrs. Zaino, and myself. We will start math rotations next week upon our return after Labor Day weekend. We will meet Monday thru Thursday from 10:00-11:00.
****PTA FUNDRAISER 3 days left-to join the PTA! $40 for a Family Membership for the year. Join today at: www.ptaatope.org****
REMINDERS:
PLEASE if you haven’t already, complete and return…
Agenda and Friday Folder Routines:
*Back-to-School Night: This Thursday, August 30thbeginning with a Parent Kickoff Meeting presented by Dr. Cameron for all of OPE from 5:45-6:25pm followed by an overview of what your child will be learning in the third grade from 6:30-7:10pmin our classroom, room 212.
Last week I wrote briefly about the haiku poem your child wrote for LeucadiArt Walk contest sponsored by Coastal Animal Hospital. Over the weekend I was notified that all the poems are posted on their website, and one received an honorable mention, Dane’s Poem, ‘Hawks’. I’ve posted all the LOLs poems below
https://sdcoastalanimal.com/haiku/
Congratulations to the LOLs for their imagination and awesome work!
On a learning/teaching note: Whenever learning can be applied in a real, worldly sense, it becomes true and meaningful for the learner. I’m glad your child could see their poem revered and published by peers in class and those outside of class too. (first names and ages only were offered when submitting poems, school and last names were not given to protect your child’s privacy).
Have a fantastic week!
Amy

Dear Third Grade Families,
Wow! What a terrific day the first day of third grade was! We got to know each other (a little bit), interviewed each other, read, did a few brain teasers, toured the campus, as well as put away supplies and shared what we were most looking forward to at being a third grader. Your child also learned about poetry and wrote a poetry for a special contest Coastal Animal Hospital is offering for Leucadia Art Walks (poems and first names only). We also learned about the Service Learning Project we’ll be doing, HANA (Help a Needy Animal). I had a wonderful time getting to know your son(s)/daughter.
Today, your child is going home with a couple items I’d like you to be on the look-out for which include:
Homework that is due this Monday, August 24th:
Staying in-touch
Every Monday I will be emailing you a newsletter that explain important events happening in-class and at school, as well as let you know what our class and all the third-grade classes will be focusing on for the next week across all content area. Also included will be links to the enrichment teachers so that you can view their websites and stay in closer communication. In addition to weekly emails, I will post newsletters and homework on our class website:
http://langevinslearners.weebly.com
Follow-up Items
Over the weekend, you should have gotten several items via email:
If you want to drive this year on a field trip, returning the driving forms over the month of August would be helpful.
If you would like me to order the three supplies on the list (earbuds, journal, three-ring binder), I’d be happy to, just let me know (I’m reimbursed by PTA), otherwise if you could send those items with your child this week it would be terrific! Thank you!
IF YOU DID NOTRECEIVE AFOREMENTIONED ITEMS IN AN EMAIL, PLEASE EMAIL ME ([email protected])AND I WILL SEND A.S.A.P. THANK YOU.
Lastly, please note that Back to School Night will take place on Thursday, August 30thbeginning with a Parent Kickoff Meeting presented by Dr. Cameron for all of OPE from 5:45-6:25 pm followed by an overview of what your child will be learning in the third grade from 6:30-7:10 pmin our classroom, room 212.
Please feel free to email me with any questions, ideas, or concerns you may have. I am looking forward to a fantastic year with your child!
Respectfully,
Amy

Last Friday, your child participated in The HANA Fund by either making an school announcement over the intercom, designing posters, helping bake goodies, advertise, work as docents, cahiers, product handlers, and setting-up/cleaning-up sales station. Everyone worked really hard and the kiddos raised $123.60 for The HANA Fund! YAY! PLEASE DON’T TELL, THEY WILL COUNT TOMORROW! THX.
Today during library, students were completely enthralled by pop-up author, Robert Sabuda. Pop-ups today have evolved with the times, using laser cuts to create intricate designs to help to a story (this is not the pop-up of your past). Here is the website for your child to learn how to make-up a pop-up Christmas Tree: http://wp.robertsabuda.com/pop-make-christmas-tree/
See attached link for additional Robert Sabuda ‘How-to’ videos and main website page.

This Thursday we will have our winter party and your (g) child may dress in pajamas. Also, our class has 24 students all together. Some treats are generously being sent for birthday celebrations and winter holiday fun with only 21 or 22 treats. Please include all our LOLs. Thanks for your consideration!
We are continuing to integrate learning about weather with science, research, writing, math, music, engineering/design, social studies, and language arts. Learners are researching weather related questions from environmental effects, structure impacts, causes, and various kinds of weather. We are monitoring changes in weather and recording data on bar graphs to observe, study, and evaluate changes we observe. Your (g) is also beginning to practice the songs about weather to demonstrate learning a different way as well as to prepare for their big performance for you. They are so excited!
To strengthen writing, kiddos are acting as detectives identifying important parts of paragraphs in other people’s writing (topic sentences, star ideas, details, and conclusion sentences) so that they can apply to their own writing. As they continue to research, they will also grow as they site their sources of interesting facts they learn about the weather. In reading, students are making inferences and providing examples of evidence that support their ideas.
In STREAM, kiddos are building bridges and will later test the structures with simulated natural disasters such as a hurricane or earthquake. They will be able to conclude if the structure they built was adequate for natural disaster that struck. If so, identify what made it withstand the force and if not, decide the weak points, reflect, and modify structure to increase durability. Ultimately, this experience should help learners to make real-life connections to weather and some of the natural weather occurrences so that they can be engaged and informed to make new designs.
The kiddos are excited about their learning!
New Links have been added under the heading STREAM that include websites to each of our enrichment teachers.
I hope you have a fantastic week!
Respectfully,
Amy

Hi Families,
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend.
Math class will be in homeroom both today and tomorrow (no homework). We will resume switching for math classes next Monday.
We worked on a Thanksgiving dinner themed set of multiple step word problems with a dozen live turkeys as the guests of honor. The kiddos are demonstrating a lot of addition and multiplication strategies and discussing problem solving techniques that include (skip counting, multiplication equations, groups/counters, array, repeated adding, and number-line). The kiddos also problem solved when a character who was on a budget didn’t have enough money to purchase all the items for the dinner; terrific ideas in problem solving.
Safe travels on this holiday weekend!
Gobble, Gobble.

- Picture Day Pamphlet which is next Monday, August 27th
- OPE Back-to-School Envelope
- ‘Read All About Me’informational poster rolled and secured with rubber band
- Agenda with Homework written on today’s date due this Friday, August 24th. (Please initial at the bottom of today’s entry)
Homework that is due this Monday, August 24th:
- ‘Read All About Me’informational poster-This poster will be presented when it is your child’s turn to be Star Student and with that in mind, best effort with color, photographs, and best writing will be celebrated! J

Also included will be links to the enrichment teachers so that you can view their websites and stay in closer communication. In addition to weekly emails, I will post newsletters and homework on our class website:

Follow-up Items
Over the weekend, you should have gotten several items via email:
- Parent Questionnaire
- Volunteer Form
- Supply List (limited)
- Driver Form

Hi Families,
I hope you had a fantastic weekend.
Language Arts/Social Studies/Science- WEATHER. We will continue our learner centered approach to inquiry as we delved into QFT, Question Formulation Technique that we will continue over the next several weeks. QFT provides students a platform to create questions that pique 'their' interests about weather; to seek what they want to learn and research.

Monday Message
November 20, 2017
